Introducing the OSG Early Career Committee

The third International Orchid Conservation Congress saw the introduction of an exciting new 'keiki' of the OSG, the Early Career Committee.  Formed unofficially at the 8th World Orchid Conference in Dijon, France, March 2004, the committee aims to act as a voice for people in their early career, whether they are students, horticulturalists, or anyone, of any age or background, who has an interest in orchid conservation and is at an early stage in their career.

Forging a successful career in orchid research and/ or conservation can be a challenging affair.  Simply getting your research heard at conferences can pose a significant limitation, often because of a lack of funding or an absence of student presentations in the program.  Even with a successful graduate or postgraduate qualification, taking the next step involves making extensive contacts and finding out about positions and internships being advertised internationally.  Equally as important is the connection between early career researchers, finding out how to get scientific collecting permits, handy tips on laboratory techniques, potential field assistance, and ensuring that we're not reinventing the wheel the world over.

The primary objectives of the committee are:

1.

To promote the research of students and people in their early career, particularly at conferences;

2.

To maintain student/ early career representation at OSG and other meetings related to orchid conservation; and

3.

To provide an international network of researchers in their early career, to share information about current projects, conferences, workshops, funding opportunities, etc.

These goals will be achieved through the creation of an online notice board, which will provide a contact base for advertising personal profiles, projects, conferences, workshops, funding, project assistance, internships, etc.  So look out for us here on the OSG website!
